MATEJ KEJŽAR PRESENTS SPENDING TIME DANCING - A DECADE IN DANCING: A RETROSPECTIVE

It is with great pleasure that we announce a grand retrospective of works by Matej Kejžar at Cankarjev dom, from 1 to 4 October.

When: October 1 - 4, 2026
Where: Cankjarev dom, Ljubljana

Matej Kejžar is an internationally renowned dancer, choreographer, and educator. He is deeply involved in some of Europe’s most progressive and compelling dance productions and presents his own work worldwide. When he received the 2023 Ksenija Hribar Award for his artistic oeuvre – one of many honours in his career – the jury described him as “an exceptional dancer and a full-blooded creator who invigorates and inspires others through collaboration in his original performances.”Through a series of events, this retrospective celebrates the past decade of his creative work.

The program opens with a screening of the film Prison Theatre Church, which functions as both a dance performance and a film in one. While a dance performance is typically the final product—inevitably concealing the conditions of its own creation from the audience—Kejžar flips the perspective.

Using film as a choreographic element, he takes us directly behind the scenes to the exact point where dance still emerges.
The screening will be accompanied by a talk with Kejžar, exploring the conceptual, philosophical, artistic, and social foundations of his work in dance.

Following this, the program continues with the presentation of three performances: Movements 9, followed by STD: The M of A, and concluding with House Bolero.
